billion in tax revenue.
California was the destination of an estimated 300 million domestic
and international (leisure and business) travelers in 2000.
Californians themselves are the mainstay of the state's travel and
tourism industry, comprising 85 percent of in-state domestic travel,
or 245 million person-trips. Out-of-state visitors account for 44
million person-trips.
California hosted 6.3 million overseas visitors in 2000. The top five
overseas visitor market countries in 2000 were Japan, the United
Kingdom, South Korea, Germany, and France.
California is a popular destination for international travelers as well.
In addition to the 6.3 million overseas visitors, over 3 million travelers
from Mexico and 1 million from Canada visited the state in 2000.
Los Angeles County receives the most domestic tourism in the
state. 45.4 million person trips took place in and through Los
Angeles County in 2000.
California's share of the domestic travel market in 2000 was 11.0%,
making it the most visited state in America.
The spending of ten international visitors has the same impact on
the California economy as does exporting one mid-size car.
